At the 1682 Conference, hosted by O3, thought leaders, innovators, and visionaries converged to explore the ever-evolving landscape of business, AI, and customer experience. Designed to be more than a series of discussions, the event showcased the challenges and opportunities of AI in shaping future business models. Here’s a look at the key insights and takeaways that defined the conference.

Opening the doors to innovation

The day began with an inspiring introduction by Kenneth Bull, CEO of Five Below, and Keith Scandone, CEO of O3. They highlighted the importance of reframing traditional business models to prioritize customer experience. Bull shared how Five Below was created to fill a gap for kids, transforming retail with a focus on memorable experiences rather than transactions, underscoring that “innovation is not what you are doing but how you are doing it.”

Mike Gadsby’s keynote: The hard truths of AI

O3’s Chief Innovation Officer, Mike Gadsby, delivered a keynote titled “AI Unveiled: Five Hard Truths,” offering unfiltered insights based on years of experimentation and strategic work with clients:

AI Is Here to Stay

Gadsby stressed that AI’s impact is undeniable. Companies that delay integrating AI risk falling behind as competitors leverage its capabilities to enhance customer experiences and streamline operations.

Data is foundational—But costly

Data is both abundant and expensive. Gadsby noted that investing in high-quality data management is crucial for AI success. Without it, even the most sophisticated AI models fail to deliver impactful results.

Humans are the biggest problem—and opportunity

“People resist what they don’t understand,” Gadsby explained. He emphasized that education and open dialogue are essential to shifting mindsets, and transforming resistance into opportunities for empowerment and growth.

AI won’t take your job—But someone who knows AI might

Emphasizing the evolution of work, Gadsby encouraged companies to upskill their teams to adapt and leverage AI effectively, turning technology into a tool for enhancing human expertise.

Expect the unexpected

The rapid pace of AI development demands agility. Companies must adopt a test-and-learn approach to remain adaptable and manage the inherent uncertainties of AI technology.

Key panels: Balancing AI and industry realities

Following Gadsby’s keynote, a series of panels expanded on these themes, diving into industry-specific applications and challenges:

Navigating AI at the intersection of risk and regulation

Moderated by April Walker, Strategic Advisor, this panel included insights from Mike Urban of Best Egg and Nate Gach of Independence Blue Cross. Urban discussed how AI supports fraud detection and customer support but stressed the importance of building internal AI councils to create usage policies and build comfort with the technology. Gach highlighted the industry’s cautious approach, noting that no insurance company is yet using generative AI for customer-facing applications due to regulatory concerns.

Shaping the future of healthcare: Evolving processes, operations, and careers

Moderated by Abhay Patel from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, this panel featured Maureen Rinkunas of Redesign Health and Michelle Cleary from Cigna. They explored how AI enhances patient care, particularly in diagnostic imaging and administrative tasks. Cleary shared Cigna’s approach to AI governance, which includes a detailed vetting process and guardrails to mitigate risk, though she noted that regulatory red tape often delays progress.
