On September 18, ADPList hosted its annual 24-hour superconference, BeMore, featuring legendary speakers discussing design, AI, product, and careers. O3’s Christine Sheller, SVP of Experience Research + Design, led a session where she shared her philosophy and approach to AI in UX.

About the session

Christine, a design leader and educator, shared her philosophy on the potential for AI to enhance UX and design processes through the right mindset, methods, and toolset. At the beginning of the session, she asked the audience about their comfort with AI, revealing that only 62.86% identified as AI enthusiasts.

The might mindset

Christine believes that a successful partnership with AI starts with the right mindset. Just as great friendships rely on mutual understanding, integrating AI into creative processes requires openness and collaboration. She likens AI to a microwave: it can perform tasks quickly, but it’s the designer’s (or chef’s) creativity and human touch that elevate those tasks into exceptional experiences. The human element is crucial for creating deeper connections.

The right methods

After discussing mindset, Christine moved on to methods, focusing on personalization, prediction, automation, and ideation. For each category, she provided real-life examples of how these principles are applied in current products and shared ideas on how designers could explore how they might incorporate these elements into their own work.

The right toolset

Christine then moved on to toolset, highlighting that with nearly 17,000 AI products on the market, choosing the right one can be daunting. She shared the approach she and her team take in reviewing and assessing new AI tools, including how she and her team use a tool assessment template.

Key takeaways

Christine closed the session with 6 key takeaways:

  1. Pick the right AI friend for the job
  2. Let AI take the wheel sometimes
  3. Brainstorm with your AI buddy when you need help with ideas
  4. Use AI to explore new thinking together
  5. Keep it fun!
  6. And lastly, remember you’re still in charge

Christine polled the audience again, curious if her talk had shifted perspectives on AI and its opportunities. She was thrilled to see the number of AI enthusiasts rise to 81.86% by the end, reflecting a nearly 19% increase.
