    Recapping 2017 Agency Field Day

Last Friday, on June 16th, we held our 4th Annual PHL Agency Field Day. The day was filled with full of fun and friendly competition, with weather that was so perfect we couldn’t possibly have asked for anything better.

Last Friday, on June 16th, we held our 4th Annual PHL Agency Field Day. The day was filled with fun and friendly competition, with weather that was so perfect we couldn’t possibly have asked for anything better.

There was a total of five agencies in the Philadelphia area that participated, and it was a ton of fun to watch them participating in relays and games, as well as socializing and enjoying refreshments. Seeing everyone’s competitive side and hunger to win was really something to watch.

As hosts, we would like to thank all the agencies that participated: Blue Cadet, Inverse Paradox, Hanlon Creative and Seer Interactive. Also, special thanks to our Culture Committee and Jackie Ost, our Office Manager who worked hard in coordinating the event and making Agency Field Day a success.

We started hosting Agency Field Day 4 years ago in an effort to get everyone out of their comfort zone to work as a team and to engage the community to come together and build a culture. This year’s Agency Field Day was definitely one for the books, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend the Friday. We hope to repeat this event next year, and continue to make it an annual event.

Agile In An Agency, Is It Possible?

At O3 World, we have adopted key principles from the Agile method into our process over the last 5 years. Like many agencies, we too have faced challenges in adopting Agile. Justin Handler, our Head of Accounts, shares his knowledge and our approach to Agile in his article, “Agile In The Agency, is It Possible?”

At O3 World, we have adopted key principles from the Agile method into our process over the last 5 years. Like many agencies, we too have faced challenges in adopting Agile. Justin Handler, our Head of Accounts, shares his knowledge and our approach to Agile in his article, “Agile In The Agency, is It Possible?

Justin is a core member of the O3 team who has been with us for the past 7 years. He has been instrumental in streamlining the O3 process of managing online projects from concept to completion with his 9 years of project management experience. He has led the management of diverse projects, including enterprise product builds, mobile applications, sales tools, eCommerce websites and much more.

In the article, Justin mentions the difficulties we face when clients expect us to define the exact requirements of a project upfront. We are a digital agency, so we create digital products, services and experiences. It can be tough when the client demands are high in a digital landscape where change is constant. But, once we accepted the reality that our process will need continuous adjusting, tweaking and improvising, we were able to extract the key methodologies from Agile and make the process work for us.

He also dives deeper into how we manage Agile projects with fixed budgets. It is difficult to define structured requirements prior to design and development so we do our best to provide a high and low range budget to our clients. Our main focus to drive this process is client communication, ensuring we build a transparent relationship from the start. We put the budget to work for our clients’ business objectives and make sure that there are no surprises with where the hours are being burned. This also gives our Project Managers the flexibility to run an Agency Agile process.

Running Agile projects can be challenging, but it is possible. As Justin states in his article:

“It’s all about being flexible, involving the entire project team from the start, and overlapping design and development to gain efficiencies and increase collaboration.”

The Internet As An Organizing Tool

On March 17th, O3’s Developer Courtney Wilburn, was invited to speak on the CreativeMornings Philadelphia show. The show’s theme was “Taboo” and Courtney took the opportunity to present her talk, “The Internet As An Organizing Tool”.

On March 17th, O3’s Developer Courtney Wilburn, was invited to speak on the CreativeMornings Philadelphia show. The show’s theme was “Taboo” and Courtney took the opportunity to present her talk, “The Internet As An Organizing Tool”.

During her talk, she illustrated how marginalized communities have used the Internet as a as a tool to drive awareness of social programs that drive their community and help to raise awareness. Technology used as a tool to bring people together, and a platform to give people a voice is just one of the benefits of the evolving industry:

    • Social media platforms allows for an unprecedented ease of rapid distribution
    • Real-time feedback and sentiment due to the virality and trending nature of social media
    • A platform for like-minded community members to share the same values, and come together as part of a larger movement

While the internet allows a sense of community, it also has its limitations. Looking back, Courtney pointed out that although people may have felt inspired and empowered, by the use of these technologies, the Internet was merely a tool.

She closed her presentation emphasizing that while the internet can be great tool to inspire activism and organize events, technology alone will not solve the underlying problem. To make a concrete difference, using the internet cannot the sole strategy. Action also needs to be taken offline and work together with the Internet to accomplish a greater goal.

You Are The Experience: A Designer's Guide to Interviewing

People don’t hire portfolios, they hire people.

Over the past 15 years, Mike Gadsby has had the honor of meeting and interviewing designers from all over the world. In all that time, he has learned one important lesson: the experience of meeting people and making a connection is just as important as the details in the work.

On April 27th, Mike, CXO of O3 World, explored the lifecycle of the hiring process for a designer at the DesignBrew event. From deciding which jobs align best with your career objectives, to preparing your portfolio to all the various intricacies that make up the interview itself, Mike talked through the do’s and don’t’s and considerations he and his colleagues’ debate as they review candidates at all levels.

Mike broke down the interview process into a life cycle:

    1. Preparing for the next job (Before)
    2. Interviewing (During)
    3. Following up after the interview (After)

In each cycle, he gave tips from his experience of the best (and sometimes worst) applicants.

    BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

Be Honest. Make sure you’re looking at the right jobs by being honest with yourself and assessing your goals. Be real about your salary requirements and do some research to make sure this job is going to meet your needs.

Don’t add fluff to fill out your resume. Your resume is one of the first things a hiring manager is going to read, so be sure that they can read it and understand what you have to offer. Be clear and concise with your language and focus on the content of your work, because they’re looking for your real experience.

Portfolio is key. As a designer, the portfolio is key for showing your process in solving real problems. Show your role in meeting business needs and telling the story. Think about presentation: for Mike, he’s looking through your portfolio on his phone whenever he gets the time. Make it easy to skim and mobile-friendly. Throughout your application, consider your personal brand. What is it that makes you different? How will you fit into the company and make it better?

    DURING THE INTERVIEW

Show them that you did your homework. The employer’s goals are to make sure you can do the work and assess how you will fit into the company long term. Do your homework and make sure you have answers to those questions. Learn about the company, their work, and their people. During the interview itself, engage with the interviewers. Work is a 50/50 prospect. Listen, ask questions, and take good notes for yourself.

Show them that you give a shit. Take time to ask good questions and work through the problem to the best of your ability. This is your chance to showcase your process.

    AFTER THE INTERVIEW

Don’t forget to follow up. Remember that ultimately, this is about building relationships and growing as a professional. Have the courtesy to follow up, and feel free to ask for feedback regardless of the result of your application. Though this job might not be the right fit here and now, consider how you can build your network and maintain your connections for the future.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

As designers, we’re tasked with developing and delivering impactful experiences. When you’re searching for a job, “you” are that experience. It’s not just about the employer finding the right employee, it’s about “you” finding the right place to grow and be successful.

2017 Philly Tech Week "Innovation Day" Recap

On May 5th, O3 World hosted Innovation Day as a part of Philly Tech Week 2017. The sold-out event was a great day filled with engaged attendees and interesting presentations on how to push innovation to new limits.

On May 5th, O3 World hosted Innovation Day as a part of Philly Tech Week 2017. The sold-out event was a great day filled with engaged attendees and interesting presentations on how to push innovation to new limits.

The event consisted of a 3 hour string of labs lightning talks, live demos, and interaction that showcased the power behind products utilizing new and emerging technologies from some of Philadelphia’s top agencies and innovation labs. Check out the recap:

“O3 Barista” presented by Howie Ross

Howie Ross, Our Development Director, kicked off the event by presenting an overview on our Labs innovation program. O3 Labs is our innovation program where we experiment with new and emerging technology to better serve our clients. The program is a great way to develop expertise in tomorrow’s technologies (such as Artificial Intelligence, Beacons, Internet of Things, and Augmented Reality) and build unique, engaging experiences that venture far beyond the screen. Here are some of our most successful projects discussed in the event: Roombot, Theme Music, Moods and Barista.

While we have a diverse roster of digital products within the O3 Labs division, we selected two specifically to showcase during Innovation Day. Attendees were then given the opportunity to try out two of our projects: Barista and Moods.

Barista, is a web app that analyzes your digital social footprint to predict your morning coffee preference. Utilizing IBM Watson’s Personality Insights API, the Barista algorithm predicts coffee roasts and provides personalized coffee recommendations based on your digital social footprint.

    How did we build Barista?

Using Artificial Intelligence, this IBM Watson Personality Insight API maps data from Twitter to the “Big Five” personality traits, also known as OCEAN (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism). Experimenting with this technology stems from our insight into the business application use for utilization of these technologies. Personality analysis and a learning algorithm through AI, can be used to prioritize and personalize customer experiences through a multitude of digital products.

    Moods Pop-Up

We also had a pop-up showroom to demonstrate Moods, which combines IBM Watson’s Personality Insights API, Artificial Intelligence, and the Phillips Hue Smart Bulbs to change the lighting color of the room based on your digital personality.

“IoT” presented by Don Coleman of Chariot Solutions

Don Coleman, Director of Consulting at Chariot Solutions, talked about a few IoT related projects that they have been working on, including an ongoing project with existing partner, Canary Compliance, a local company who is revolutionizing compliance within the service station industry.

Chariot Solutions, a leading enterprise application and mobile development consulting firm, discussed how they worked with Canary Compliance, a cloud-based IoT project that utilized state of the art hardware to drive business value. The product will provide real-time tank visibility to gas station owners, reducing risk, cost, and administrative burdens.

This hands on-workshop provided a thorough overview on how to build and program an IoT (Internet of Things) device using the Particle Photon. Reviewing how sensor data is sent to and received from the Particle Cloud. Don also discussed Canary Compliance, on how to build a cloud-based Nodejs program to interact with your device through the Particle Cloud. From his talk, attendees learned about specifics of the IoT hardware and how organizations are applying it in order to drive significant value.

“Split Flap Displays” presented by Mark D. Kuhn of Oat Foundry

Oat Foundry is an agency of Mechanical Engineers that design and build cool stuff for brands and companies. Mark D. Kuhn, CEO of Oat Foundry shared their adventures on building one of their latest projects, a Split Flap Display. Their customer wanted to change the customer buying experience so that rather than listening for someone to yell out an order number when your order’s up, instead you could listen for the nostalgic flapping of a split flap display. The idea was unique, an old-timey solari board aka split flap display traditionally used to show departures and arrivals in train stations and airports repurposed for the fast casual atmosphere of your local Honeygrow.

He shared the adventures of executing this product, which involved months of sheet metal design, circuit board prototyping, motor rails, screen printing tests, 3D modeling, coding, and constant testing. With their hard work, they successfully rolled out their final Split Flap Display.

“Using Design Thinking to Accelerate Medical Device Development” presented by Bon Ku of Thomas Jefferson University

Dr. Bon Ku, founder and director of JeffDESIGN, a program in a medical school that teaches future physicians to use design thinking to healthcare challenges. The College within the College Design Track (JeffDESIGN) teaches students to use design thinking to solve healthcare challenges. The design program equips students to redesign healthcare systems, services, spaces and medical devices. The program format involves interactive workshops co-facilitated by designers, architects and device makers. Previous workshops have invited facilitators from Little Devices Lab at MIT, University of the Arts and Philadelphia University.

One of their most recent innovative projects which was presented during Innovation Day was “Circalux”, a user-responsive, portable night light that was designed to help sleep-deprived patients in hospitals. Dr. Bon Ku emphasized on the point that it is their desire to build empathy with patients that inspire innovation in healthcare, NOT technology.

The JeffDESIGN Director is Bon Ku, MD, MPP, and the Co-Directors are Julie Guinn, M.Des. and Robert S. Pugliese, PharmD, BCPS.

    “machineQ” presented by Michael Putterman

Michael Putterman from Comcast, presented their newest venture, MachineQ (machine quotient), a new Comcast service that leverages the latest in sensor, network, and software technologies to gather, transmit, and create actionable intelligence from the physical world. Leveraging a variety of wireless and wireline technologies, machineQ accommodates deep indoor and outdoor use cases, enabling cost-effective solutions suitable for a wide range of enterprise applications.

This network is designed for the implementation of smart city technologies, among other innovative uses. Michael discussed how the IoT revolution will transform our day-to-day, how MachineQ may help transform the way we think about solving challenges and innovating in our cities.

    Event Approach

When planning Innovation Day, we set out to create an event with a primary goal of generating awareness around innovation and emerging technologies. Not only did we achieve that goal, but the result far exceeded any expectations that we had going into the event. We can’t say thank you enough to all the attendees and speakers, the O3 staff and to our sponsor La Colombe for making this event a success!

Adapt, Connect, Collaborate: 3 Keys to Agency Growth

Our CEO and Co-Founder Keith Scandone presented at Digital Agency Summit, a 5-day online summit that brings together leading experts from around the world who have successfully grown their agencies or helped other agency owners achieve it, to share their system and experience on how to scale an agency to the next level.

Throughout today’s digital ecosphere, change is constant. Owning an agency means keeping up with that change. Keith’s presentation, “Adapt, Connect, and Collaborate - 3 Keys to Agency Growth” focuses on these three points for drive successful agency growth. Adapting your business model to meet market needs, as well as collaborating with peers and potential competitors are crucial to digital agency success.

    ADAPT

Don’t be a one trick pony. Over the years, Keith and his business partner, Mike Gadsby CXO, have made it a priority to adapt to changes within the technology space. While it’s important to have a specialization that makes your team the experts, the main business strategy must be focused on the pace of which the industry is growing and evolving. Technology is constantly emerging. Change is inevitable and we all need to better ourselves about adapting to technology. If you don’t try to broaden your skillset within your current specialization, you could get left behind.

Internally at O3 World, we have weekly department meetings to look at new programs, new processes, new technology and new ways of doing things constantly. We also have a Labs division where we have the opportunity to experiment with new and emerging technology. This enables us to leverage some of our innovative ideas to pitch to existing clients, and it’s also been unbelievably valuable from a PR standpoint.

    CONNECT

Absolutely nothing can replace face-to-face communication. Most companies think they’re doing a sufficient enough job networking and connecting with peers. But the truth is, you can never do enough work on the account management side. From the very first phone call, to the first meeting, to the project kickoff, every touchpoint is extremely important.

The majority of O3’s business is from existing relationships or referrals. This enables us to be very selective up-front with the type of clients that we want to work with as opposed to taking any clients just for the profit. O3 has been fortunate to experience significant growth over the last 5 years, and this can all be attributed to finding the right relationships upfront, and looking at long-term opportunity for growth. We are continually managing relationships, staying in front of it to show that we are innovative, and always showing that we’re our clients’ advocates. We approach each relationship with mutual respect and focus on our clients’ business goals, which has proven to be an effective relationship building model.

    COLLABORATE

Collaborate with everybody, even with your competition. You do not specialize in EVERY service, and that’s okay. Just be honest and consultative. Be a strategic lead in the process, and make recommendations. Find strategic partners that can provide the work and produce better products, because this will make you look good in the end. This also supports point #2 and drives trust within clients. 47% of our business is referrals from another agency because we have built strong relationships and bonds with others. We have looked out for them, and they have looked out for us.

Collaborate for the greater good. Every city has too many events and too many meetups which creates noise and time management challenges. We need to build better events, get better attendees and network more efficiently, letting the city, industry, and community drive our success. For Forge Conference, a digital product design conference founded by O3, we’ve worked with our competitors to get the site and materials out. We’ve put out press releases on how we’ve worked together, showing our willingness to share resources and ideas. We supported the city and the industry, which has been beneficial to our strategic relationships. We also host an annual Agency Field Day, which is an afternoon of fun and healthy competition for Philadelphia’s digital agencies. We purposely connect with competing agencies to get out for the day to play games, have a few drinks, and get to know one another to remind each other that we’re all in this together.

Watch this video for Keith’s full presentation.

O3 World Named One of Philadelphia Business Journal's "Cool Offices"

We are proud to announce that O3 World was recently added to Philadelphia’s cool office spaces list by the Philadelphia Business Journal. Our offices are located on Frankford Avenue, in Fishtown, Philadelphia. We’ve been in this location since 2012 and cannot be happier with our space which fits perfectly with our organization's culture.

“From Vincent van Gogh pixel art to standing desks, O3 World has a sweet setup in Philadelphia. Its exposed brick walls and high ceilings revitalized the original building for this digital agency.”*

We are proud to announce that O3 World was recently added to Philadelphia’s cool office spaces list by the Philadelphia Business Journal. Our offices are located on Frankford Avenue, in Fishtown, Philadelphia. We’ve been in this location since 2012 and cannot be happier with our space which fits perfectly with our organization’s culture.

We believe in a balanced environment, where positivity, hard work and happy hours coexist. While much of our time is spent at our desks, at whiteboards, or in meetings, we’ve created a culture that makes the outside world an integral part of our daily working routines. The challenging, progressive work we do keeps us energized and exhilarated, while our culture and space keeps us grounded, puts things in perspective, and makes us better at what we do. But most of all, it makes us a team.

When deciding to expand our office space based on company growth, “we wanted to move into Fishtown because it was an opportunity to grow with the neighborhood, in hopes of becoming an anchor tenant for a gentrifying area. Also having a chance to custom design and develop an office from scratch to match our style and structure was very appealing and unique,” said Keith Scandone, our CEO and Co-Founder here at O3 World.

On February 13th, Courtney Wilburn one of our talented developers, was flown out to San Francisco by Github to participate in SoureRoad and Wontfix, two national open source events.

SourceRoad is a one-day summit for black open source software project maintainers, contributors, and rising leaders. In addition to talks about legal issues related to open source software, and how to build a successful business based on open source software, participants had open discussions about the role that their ethnicities play in the work that they do.

WONTFIX_ is a one-day un-conference for open source software maintainers held at Github. The discussions were attendee guided, and ranged from ethics in open source software, to building community. At the end of each discussion session, representatives from each small breakout group recapped their discussions and shared notes.

As an open source maintainer, Courtney was able to hear from fellow maintainers about what they’ve learned, and some of the issues that they’ve come across. Her attendance at SourceRoad and WONTFIX_ coincided with the release of O3 Lab’s Barista and Moods as open source projects. In addition to gaining insight into best practices for Courtney’s personal work, we hope that O3 World will be well equipped to continue to succeed in the innovation space while becoming valuable members of the open source software community.

O3 WORLD SHARES INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS WITH THE OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY

The development department at O3recently made it a priority to give back to the open-source community, and as a result, open-sourced two of our Labs projects, O3 Barista and O3 Moods, as well as the style guide used for all official Labs projects.

The development department at O3 recently made it a priority to give back to the open-source community, and as a result, open-sourced two of our Labs projects, O3 Barista and O3 Moods, as well as the style guide used for all official Labs projects. We hope to continue taking part in open-source projects to share the mechanics and architectures behind these user experiences, encourage collaboration between developers, and ultimately strengthen the open-source community while continuing to learn from it as well.

We utilize open-source software when possible on internal projects, to continuously bring innovation and meaningful user experiences to life. Now that the O3’ s Labs department created a framework to allow us to experiment with projects more frequently, we saw this as a perfect opportunity to give back to the open-source community, providing access to how these projects are actually built. We take a lot of pride in our labs team and believe we can inspire others in the same way that the open-source community has inspired us.

A few of months ago some of our talented developers presented one of our most recent Labs Project, O3 Barista, at Philly BarCamp. We are proud to announce that we have launched the official application online, with a decision to open-source.

Barista utilizes IBM Watson’s Personality Insights API, to run an analysis of a user’s social footprint to identify personality traits. Using an algorithm we designed that uses machine learning to optimize results, the application maps Watson’s analysis to different types of coffee roasts and suggests them to the user. The user is presented with the option to provide feedback, which our algorithm learns from to refine the experience.

We attended this event to hear about what others had to say about the tech scene here in Philly.

The goal of this event was to bring together partners and influencers to discuss the future of Philadelphia tech. We attended this event to hear about what others had to say about the tech scene here in Philly.

It was very refreshing to see an all-women panelist in a tech event, who by the way were not gathered to talk about what it’s like to be a woman in the tech space, but to share their thoughts on how the Philly tech scene has evolved over the years, and how they think we, as a community, need to act to push Philly past the tipping point.

The panel was comprised of Danielle Cohn, Director of Entrepreneurial Engagement at Comcast; Tiffanie Standard, CEO and Founder of Stimulus; and Stephanie Glenn, VP of SMB Sales at Salesforce. They discussed a wide range of topics from forecasting trends in Philly’s tech ecosystem, to working with startups and entrepreneurs and bettering Philadelphia as a community.

    OUR MAIN TAKEAWAYS

Philly is at a tipping point and it is an exciting time to be a part of the Philly Tech Scene. In contrast to what these speakers have seen from city to city, Philly’s inclusiveness in tech scene gives the city an advantage. The tech community as a whole needs to continue building relationships and resources for others that are new to the city, and also by spreading the word about what’s happening here and leveraging the diversity we have as an asset.

Over the years, we have seen a growth in many events and meetups happening here, that bring tremendous value to the technology and digital scene, and we must continue to focus on coming together as a community by fostering connections between tech companies to keep the trended tech growth we’ve seen in Philadelphia.

Selling Work Is a Design Skill

This January, Dan Singer, UX Strategist at O3 World attended Mike Monteiro’s talk, “Presenting Work With Confidence” held at Seer Interactive. The purpose of this talk was to teach effective presentation techniques in order to persuade clients that your work is good and will solve their business problems.

Here are some key takeaways from the talk:

Selling work is a core design skill.

He spoke against the idea that good design will sway clients on its own merit: it’s not magic. To be successful in design and to succeed as a business, you need to both do good work and persuade clients that it is good. Work that you didn’t sell is no better than work you didn’t do.

Mistakes that designers have all made at some point.

As designers, we teach our clients how to talk about our work by the way we talk about our work. Confidence is coming in and owning the room: you’re telling them to trust you and your process. Tell clients why they are there, and what they’re adding to the process. Talk about how the decisions you make as a designer work with the decisions they make on their business by asking for specific feedback. Asking “Do you like this?” is a huge mistake, because we don’t want to know that! Something that they like might not be the thing that leads to their success. Our job is to come in and bring our experience and data to deliver work that will solve their problems.

    Confidence helps with trust.

Confidence isn’t about you - it’s about your clients. Your confidence helps them to trust you and your processes, ultimately resulting in better work for their business

The Robots Are Coming: Artificial Intelligence Is on the Rise

Mike Gadsby is a Co-Founder and the Chief Experience Officer at O3 World. In addition to leading client and product strategy, Mike also oversees O3’s Labs and R&D initiatives. This article was originally published in Philly Ad News January/February 2017 issue. Read full below.

We all want to feel special. Now, more than ever, as consumers in the digital space, we desire delightful and effortless encounters with the brands and products we love. Personalization has become a key component to that relationship. Whether that is one of the many monthly clothing subscription clubs that have popped up over the past few years like Trunk Club or Stitch Fix, or perhaps the slew of emails you received this holiday season promoting “deals just for you,” selling in the digital space has become far more about quickly and effectively creating successful micro-moments tailor fit to the end user than just throwing gaudy deals at people. Brands are constantly seeking to bring the person-to-person, in-store experience online, and the more relevant and specific the experience the better.

    REAL CONVERSATIONS

In seeking the ultimate in personalized experiences, the best digital brands are moving beyond segments, filters, and product or service options. They’re not seeking to understand the customer at a much deeper level and then create a real conversation leveraging that insight to give people, more exactly, what they’re looking for. Going back to something like a Trunk Club the idea that I can interface with a “real stylist” to discuss my likes and dislikes as a part of a real conversation online has become a model for a new, digital relationship consumers now expect. Here’s the thing, though, those folks are expensive - - particularly if you go beyond retail and look at services like law, or more, regularly now, financial services.

ENTER THE CHATBOT … AND A.I.

Chatbots are nothing new per se. They’ve been around in simple forms for quite a while. The rise of artificial intelligence though has supercharged bots to the point where a real, engaging human conversation can be had on all sorts of topics. The big evolution is that these bots learn. Piles and piles of data are continuously fed to the bots to make more accurate, predictive and - dare I say - superhuman assessments of various situations. This is a critical distinction that separates the new pack of programs from its predecessors. That personalized brand experience cannot simply be replaced with cold Q and A. Brands will lose trust and, more importantly, lose hearts and minds if the bots do not improve the customer experience. Bots need to be perceived as valuable as their human counterparts. But, how do they work?

    GETTING TO KNOW YOU

As any salesperson will tell you, the more information they have about you, the more they can construct a message and a sale specific to your needs. In the online space, this used to be difficult, or at least fairly rudimentary. Now, we can use all sorts of a.I. to get to know you better. At O3, we’ve actually been leveraging various forms of personality insights based on a few of the natural language processing API’s from IBM’s Watson project. As an example, if we can see your Twitter profile, your Instagram feed or your Facebook timeline, we can make a fairly accurate assessment about the type of person you are for traits like openness, curiosity or even narcissism based off of years of social content. Couple that with past purchase behavior or, perhaps, a financial profile, then a chatbot conversation can become not only more factually relevant, it’s tone can be more appropriate for a successful interaction. They can literally tell me not just what I need to hear, but how I want to hear it. It’s actually gotten to a point where telling the difference between bot and human is almost imperceivable.

    ‘ALEXA, TELL ME THE FUTURE’

While the rise of chatbots as a form of brand relationship is interesting, an online chat as a form of communication is still a rather cold experience. The human connection is lost a little in every letter we key on the screen. As A.I continues to improve and voice platforms like Siri and Alexa get smarter, I think the next big shift in brand interaction will certainly move off of screens and into actual, physical conversations and interactions. The connected home is just the beginning of this journey. Turning on lights and ordering pizza are fairly simple interactions. But, imagine a world where complaining that you have “nothing to wear” results in a new wardrobe on your doorstep in a matter of hours. Or, perhaps a place where my mood affects the lightning or sound in a room. While there are certainly dangers in creating such a connected experience, in its most positive form, I love the idea that we’re creating future where our spaces are smart enough to make our days better and our brand experiences more personal.

O3 Moods is an application that transforms the atmosphere of a room by altering the lighting to match the personality of whoever is in the room. It does this by harnessing the power of Twitter and IBM’s Watson API, specifically its Personality Insights feature. O3 Moods takes tweets from a given account, analyzes the personality of that user, translates that user’s personality to a color, and then changes the colors of the lights in the room to that color. Check out the application here.

    The technologies behind this are:

    • IBM’s Watson API
    • Philips Hue Lights
    • AngularJS (frontend)

Founders of O3 World Discuss Strategies to Capitalize on Emerging Technology Trends

On Thursday, December 1st our Co-Founders, Keith Scandone, CEO and Mike Gadsby, CXO were featured on Greenberg News show on WNJZ 1316AM, hosted by Brian Greenberg.

On Thursday, December 1st our Co-Founders, Keith Scandone, CEO and Mike Gadsby, CXO were featured on Greenberg News show on WNJZ 1316AM, hosted by Brian Greenberg.

The highlight of the interview was focused on new technology trends in the marketplace and how O3 World helps clients capitalize on market opportunities, while leveraging the latest in emerging technologies.

The main goal of the talk was targeted to how technology is constantly evolving, and how O3 stays ahead of the curve by testing the boundaries for ourselves and our clients. The process around why technology is evolving the way it is, is very important to us and for our philosophy. When creating digital products, Mike Gadsby pointed out that there is a thoughtful boundary between not what can be done, but what should be done and why. Our focus here at O3 World is answering that question, and then in turn creating meaningful user experiences. When first presented with a project we define the problem, then work to solution the need. In order to create effective solutions, we must understand the user and talk to the audience. This is how we create products and applications that serve our clients’ needs and create more immersive and personalized experiences within our products. Asking questions is crucial for us, in order to best serve our clients.

O3 World’s key differentiation is experimenting with new technologies, which we highlight in our Labs program. We want our clients to know we have experience working with these technologies so they are not the very first one. “The reality is with a a lot of these technologies, there aren’t a lot of people out there who’ve gotten into them and if they have, they’ve gotten into them in very specific ways. We are trying to create a broader reach, we don’t just create them–we also gather the data to learn from each product. It’s not that we are just building them, we are learning from it”. You can learn more about our past Labs projects here.

The “Greenberg News Show,” founded by Brian C. Greenberg, airs Thursdays from 5pm-6pm each week and you can listen to the interview here.

Contact us to discuss how O3 World can utilize our process for emerging technologies to drive your business needs.

O3 World Partners with PAI to teach students about Career Opportunities in Tech

Last Friday, students from Roxborough High School took a field trip to our office in Fishtown, Philadelphia, to learn about the different opportunities to pursue a career in technology. They participated in a UX Design workshop led by our CXO, Mike Gadsby. Last Friday, students from Roxborough High School took a field trip to our office in Fishtown, Philadelphia, to learn about the different opportunities to pursue a career in technology. They participated in a UX Design workshop led by our CXO, Mike Gadsby. This opportunity was organized by the Philadelphia Academies Inc, a non-profit organization that help connect students interests’ with career aspirations by providing them professional learning experiences, and a chance to apply classroom learnings to real-world problems.

The day was kicked off by Mike Gadsby, CXO, with an introduction to O3 World, and some background of the company and how we have evolved over the years along with our clients. They next heard from our Lead UX Strategist (Lauren Slattery), Design Director (Mark Amadio), Lead Developer (Jay Forbes), Developer (Cole Kettler) and lastly, our Account Strategist (Justin Handler). Their presentations included their job descriptions, career paths and what moved them toward their current roles in the digital space and what keeps them challenged.

Once the students were familiarized with O3 World and our Departments, they were given a Design Thinking Exercise, a 5-step process for defining problems, users and solutions. Each group was given a “User” to interview, then were tasked with redesigning that User’s favorite app.

They then created paper prototypes and as a group tested their prototypes on the User to see if they solved the User’s requests and made the app easier to use. The students learned problem-solving skills in design that they can take back to the classroom and share with their peers.

See what our Lead UX Strategist and Developer had to say about the event:

“I thought it was really great, I would absolutely do it again. It was really exciting to hear everyone’s ideas and see them really get involved and work together as a team. I think they really enjoyed the paper prototyping they did at the end of the exercise. They were so creative and thoughtful about it, and I think it showed them just how capable they are. I hope they feel inspired about design thinking and keep up the great work!”

“It was wonderful to watch them designing and building together; their drive is remarkable. I’m happy that I could share my experience with them, and look forward to learning from them in turn. Truth from the bottom of my heart. It was a treat to have them. I like seeing people start young.”

We thank Philadelphia Academies Inc for this amazing opportunity, allowing us to play a role for these young students’ career paths.

Courtney Wilburn Speaks at WordCamp US 2016

We’re proud that one of our talented Full Stack Developers Courtney Wilburn will hold a session titled “The Back End Is Dead: A New Paradigm for Assessing Talent & Creating Great Applications.” at thE 2015 WordCamp US

This Friday December 2nd, WordCamp US will be hosted at the Philadelphia Convention Center. WordCamp is an event where WordPress enthusiasts and more gather to learn to get the most out of WordPress. The event, which is community-organized, offers something for everyone, from blogging newbies to professional developers, from marketing professionals to experienced designers, from tech enthusiasts to leading technologists. Most importantly, they provide a welcoming, engaging and safe space for WordPress users to get to know one another.

We’re proud that one of our talented Full Stack Developers Courtney Wilburn will hold a session titled “The Back End Is Dead: A New Paradigm for Assessing Talent & Creating Great Applications.” During this session she will draw on the ideas that when companies are in search of new developers, they look for people who fall into one of three categories: Front-End, Back-End, and Full-Stack. She points out that these categories can be limiting, and if we take a moment to consider this, we may end up hiring more qualified people. This session will explain how this would create teams more well-suited to build a wide variety of websites and applications. If we think about the labels companies use in hiring we can introduce a new way of thinking of the stack, and how we hire the people who build it.

Our Lead Front End developer Brian Crumley spoke at the Interdisciplinary Interaction Design Conference hosted at Millersville University this past weekend. This Conference focuses on bringing together established professionals in web, experience, interactive and creative fields.  Attendees included students, professionals and staff.

Brian demonstrated how to find efficiency in building front-end design systems from a living Style Guide. In most instances the word Style Guide conjures thoughts of a document outlining specs on things such as logo spacing, colors, and typography – all defined for a print medium. This type of document was never intended to be translated directly to the web; but when built and maintained for the web, it can make a site more performant, improve user experience, aid in onboarding new team members, and increase design and development efficiency.

He was joined by Victor Yocco Research Director at EY Intuitive, Liese Zahabi Assistant Professor of Graphic/Interactive Design at University of Maryland and John Halfpenny a Reputation Specialist at BrandYourself.

Brian Crumley speaks at Elements: The Web Conference at Penn State

O3 World Lead Front-End Developer Brian Crumley speaks at Elements: The Web Conference at Penn State 2016

The web is suffering from a nasty condition: obesity. To the detriment of their businesses and users, many companies operate under the assumption that, because devices, browsers, and data are faster and more powerful, performance must naturally be better for users, as well. But considering Google’s emphasis on page load time in search rankings and the multiple studies that show that users won’t stick through slow page load times, is this an assumption we can afford to make? At Elements: The Web Conference at Penn State, O3 World Lead Front-End Developer Brian Crumley will explore the best practices in performance-tuning a website. He’ll cover tools, techniques, and considerations to help make sites go fast, whether they’re just kicking off, mid-development, or already launched. Register to learn more during Brian’s session, “The Need for Speed: Front-End Performance Optimization,” today!

Keith Scandone speaks on company culture at Philly Tech Week

Join Keith Scandone for Creating Culture with Purpose at Philly Tech Week on May 3.

In the tech world, attempts at explaining company culture read too much like a Skymall catalog. Nap pods! Foosball! Hoverboards! But perks don’t build culture; people do. Great company cultures are imagined, built, and maintained with purposeful planning that starts with company leadership and is nurtured by everyone on the team. Fortunately, the entire team at O3 World is committed to creating an inclusive, positive company culture, led by our biggest cultural advocate, Partner and CEO Keith Scandone. His efforts to consistently craft and curate the O3 World culture have led the agency to be recognized as one of Entrepreneur’s “Top Company Cultures” and “Best Entrepreneurial Companies” in 2015, as well as one of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” in 2014 and 2015. On May 3, he’ll participate in Leadnomics and Margo’s Philly Tech Week panel, “Creating Culture with Purpose,” to discuss how to build a great company culture. Register today!

O3 World’s Mike Gadsby and Justin Handler tag-team presentation at LaSalle University

Tonight, catch O3 World's Mike Gadsby and Justin Handler speaking to students at LaSalle University.

Tonight, O3 World CXO Mike Gadsby and Account Strategist Justin Handler head to LaSalle University to speak to students in the marketing and digital arts departments. Both Mike and Justin bring unique perspectives on working in digital agencies.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and getting his feet wet in the branding world, Mike Gadsby elected to take their reins himself and become self-employed at 24. In 2005, he took an even bigger leap, when he co-founded O3 World. Now, after more than 10 years in business, Mike is a business owner, an employer, a mentor, and an innovator. He’ll talk about that and offer insights into what he looks for in employees.

Justin Handler, on the other hand, has a different experience. After beginning his career in project management at an agency just outside New York City, this LaSalle grad joined O3 World in 2010 and is now the company’s longest-tenured employee. Over the next five years, he rose through the ranks to become lead project manager. Now,  as account strategist, he’ll take the project management skills he’s honed, the client relationships he’s built, and his thoughtful, strategic mindset to a new level. He’ll share his experience in finding a job after college, building a successful career, and more with the Explorers today.

Philadelphia community leaders collaborate on ForgeConf.com

Forge Conference returns September 26, 2016

The second annual Forge Conference was a huge success in 2015. In case you need a refresher on what “huge success” meant to us, as conference organizers, here are a few bullet points:

Needless to say, we were thrilled to see the response to the event and determined to make the conference bigger and better in 2016. To do that, we turned to Philadelphia’s creative community in search of new partners for our one-day digital innovation conference. We assembled an incredibly talented group of people who shared our passion for bringing the industry’s top talent to Philadelphia. Now, we’re proud to share the fruits of our labor.

Tony Nguyen, a top-notch digital art director at Free People and head dreamer at PHLDesign.co, graciously donated his time and skill to design the new ForgeConf.com. Once the design was in place, our friends at Inverse Paradox took over, generously offering their talents to develop the site. We are so grateful for their contributions to this effort and excited to see all of you at Forge Conference on September 26!

O3 World named an Official Honoree for two Webby Awards

We’re thrilled to announce that our work has been recognized in two categories in the 20th Annual Webby Awards. The first of these honors – that for Best Professional Services Website – highlights o3world.com. The site, designed by O3 World staff, is a true reflection of the agency, bringing people and culture, as well as products and services, to the forefront. In addition to that honor, O3 World was recognized a second time as a Best Events Website Official Honoree for our work on forgeconf.com. The site for the one-day event for digital innovators felt like the 2015 conference itself: a place for makers. The origami-like SVG shapes are pieced together to guide content through negative spaces in the responsive one-page site.

“Honorees like O3 World are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of The Webby Awards. “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 13,000 entries we received this year.”

Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. We at O3 World are proud to be named Official Honorees for these prestigious awards!

O3 Labs Uses Connected Tech to Make Meetings More Efficient

Roombot helps keep meetings more productive, efficient, and on-time!

When employees started to notice that meetings were exceeding their allotted time slots and creating a log jam for subsequent meetings, we turned to O3 Labs to come up with a solution. There are, of course, a ton of creative ways to let someone know that it’s time to wrap up a meeting, but we decided to find a way to let the room do the work for us. We created Roombot – a connected native Mac OS X app that connects with the company’s Google Calendar API and Hue Bulb API, which controls the room’s lighting. Upon detecting back-to-back meetings, Roombot dims the room’s Hue light bulbs and announces that the next meeting should be starting in the next few minutes. Roombot makes meetings more productive, efficient and on-time by creating more urgency and more structure to the team’s calendars. And instead of having a line of people waiting outside a conference room, we’ve got a fun way to remind people to wrap up their meeting and get ready for the next group of people to occupy the space. Check out the video (or the articles on Technical.ly Philly and Geekadelphia) to see how it works!

That’s why, when the Philadelphia Inquirer reached out to hear about the impact our neighborhood’s had on businesses (and vice versa), we couldn’t wait to chat with them. The community is collaborative, supportive, and constantly expanding, so we’re looking forward to seeing what’s next. Check out the article, “Fishtown, where small businesses bloom,” on philly.com!

O3 World Upgrades PHLDNC.com, the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee Site for the Democratic National Convention

O3 World upgrades the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee site

Last week, the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee launched a blog and online press room leading up to the Democratic National Convention, which will be hosted in the City of Brotherly Love from July 25-28, 2016. These additional site components provide an enhanced user experience for visitors to PHLDNC.com, enabling them to learn about Philadelphia from individuals who work, live, and study here, as well as acting as a one-stop resource for Host Committee news. The blog and press room were developed by O3 World after the first phase of visual design and user interface upgrades to the Host Committee’s site earlier this year.

The online press room will house the Host Committee’s downloadable press releases and news clips, links to Visit Philadelphia’s press room photo page, and links to the Host Committee’s primary social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. The blog will serve as a source of information about different sectors of the city, providing readers with a taste of Philadelphia. It will be comprised of posts written by Host Committee staff and more than 20 local knowledgeable contributors who truly understand Philadelphia’s vibrant culture. The posts will depict various aspects of the Philadelphia experience for an audience of delegates, members of the media, residents and visitors.

These are the latest upgrades the Host Committee and O3 World have made to the website as the Host Committee prepares to welcome, inform, and make announcements to local residents, businesses, Convention guests, and members of the press leading up to the Democratic National Convention.

“The Host Committee’s website is a resource of information and fun things to do in Philadelphia for both the 50,000 visitors coming here for the DNC as well as residents who will experience the excitement around town during Convention week,” said Kevin Washo, Executive Director of the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee. “The additional enhancements to our website will help us better communicate with the public and provide a taste of the Philadelphia experience, and we continue to be grateful to local O3 World for its support and services throughout the redesign process.”

“At O3 World, we strongly believe in collaborating for the greater good of the community and the city. Lending a hand with PHLDNC.com was a perfect opportunity to do that,” said Keith Scandone, Partner and CEO of O3 World. “We’re proud to be part of Philadelphia as the city hosts the DNC in 2016 and excited to play a small role in its success.”

    e-Commerce Builds Business for Lug-All

    Check out the new Lug-All.com

For the past seven years, O3 World has partnered with leading overhead crane manufacturer Spanco and its hoist manufacturing arm, Lug-All, to create high-performance websites that match their high-performance products. In 2016, Lug-All turned to O3 World to redesign its site and introduce a new e-commerce offering to sell hoists online at lug-all.com for the first time. This responsive, user-friendly site was built using the flexible, open source commerce platform Magento Community Edition.

At the crux of the decision to add an e-commerce component to the site was the need to help customers find the parts they need, so the team built in a custom search functionality to address that issue and provide a better user experience. Since the site launched in late January, the site has quickly become an important tool to connect more people with Lug-All. O3 World is proud to partner with Lug-All and help build its business.

O3 World Partners with the Democratic National Convention Host Committee to Show off the Best of Philadelphia

O3 World upgraded the DNC Host Committee website, phldnc.com

As Philadelphia prepares to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention, the Host Committee turned to O3 World to upgrade its existing website, www.PHLDNC.com. The first phase launched today, offering a more navigable, easy-to-use experience as they search for information related to the Convention, which comes to the City of Brotherly Love July 25-28, 2016.

The first phase of the PHLDNC.com refresh features a number of updates to the site’s visual design and user interface, including a new mobile menu to make the site fully navigable across devices. The O3 World team also turned the Host Committee’s Vendor Directory, which provides information about vendors and suppliers available for contract into a live searchable database available on-site for anyone seeking vendors for their own Convention-related needs. The Vendor Directory aggregates information by business name or specialty and category, and enables hyper-specific searches by providing an option to filter by specific business certification. Lastly, the site’s new CMS will improve the ease and speed with which the Host Committee provides updates and news as the Convention nears.

These are the first in a series of upgrades the Host Committee and O3 World will make to the website as the Host Committee prepares to welcome, inform, and make announcements to local residents, businesses, Convention guests, and members of the press leading up to the Democratic National Convention.

“We’re proud to partner with the Host Committee and donate our services for such an important initiative.” said Keith Scandone, partner and CEO of O3 World. “As the DNC shines a spotlight on Philadelphia, it’s an honor to make a positive contribution to an event that showcases city’s growth and significance.”

Catch O3 World Developer Courtney Wilburn at the Lesbians Who Tech Summit

    Courtney Wilburn

More than 1,500 LGBTQ women and allies across all areas of technology will come together in San Francisco for the Lesbians Who Tech Summit this month. This is the only event focused on increasing visibility and tech participation in two historically underrepresented communities: the women’s and queer communities. In the summer of 2015, O3 World Developer Courtney Wilburn was named one of the White House’s LGBTQ Tech & Innovation Fellows – a prestigious group of innovative, talented, and influential technologists, designers, product specialists, and community leaders assembled to help solve some of America’s toughest challenges.

After months of hard work and collaboration, Courtney will present her team’s project, GreenBook App, to the Lesbians Who Tech community via Google Hangout. As lead developer on a project focused on police and law enforcement data, Courtney will explain how their solutions can give communities the opportunity to visualize local law enforcement data and provide people with the opportunity to provide feedback about their interactions with law enforcement. If you can’t attend the summit, follow along with the conversation on February 26 using the hashtag #LWTSummit on Twitter.

O3 World CXO Mike Gadsby Talks Innovation at World Usability Day 2015

O3 World's Mike Gadsby presents at World Usability Day 2015

On November 12, O3 World Partner and CXO Mike Gadsby presents “Measuring Innovation: Setting Up Insight Systems for Labs Programs” at World Usability Day 2015. The event, hosted by Bresslergroup and PhillyCHI, will focus on the theme of innovation, which ties in perfectly with the focus of the O3 Labs initiative.

In 2014, Mike Gadsby green-lit the first Labs project at O3 World with the goal of creating a series of experiments that allow us to gain valuable experience with emerging technologies that we could then add to our arsenal of client services. By that criteria, our first few projects were highly successful. We learned new things, people thought it was cool, now we can bring that experience into the solutions we develop. And then it dawned on us: it’s cool to play with all this new tech, but that’s really only half the battle.

    • What did we really learn about the experiences we created?
    • Where are the friction points?
    • What are the real world applications of these experiments?

In recent weeks, we’ve created a feedback loop in all our experiments whereby we’ll be evaluating the experience through data and qualitative research. In this lightning talk for PhillyCHI, we’ll examine a series of studies we’ve begun through our O3 Theme Music project.

Register to attend the 2015 World Usability Day event at Bresslergroup today!

O3 World Has One of the Country's Top Company Cultures

O3 World has one of the country's Top Company Cultures

After being named one of Philadelphia’s “Best Places to Work” and one of Entrepreneur’s “Best Entrepreneurial Companies” this fall, O3 World can add another feather to its cap: a place on Entrepreneur’s Top Company Cultures list for small enterprises. This honor recognizes the agency’s exceptional culture, which drives employee engagement, exceeds employee expectations, and directly impacts company success.

In O3 World’s 10-year history, the agency has thoughtfully and deliberately transformed with the business world, but this evolution doesn’t stop at the boilerplate; it extends beyond the brand itself and into the agency’s culture. In order to nurture an empowered and ever-changing culture, O3 World focuses on transparency in an effort to provide opportunities to get to know the agency and to develop individual skills. New projects and new opportunities are driven by employees, including an annual event for digital innovators (Forge Conference) and a Labs initiative focused on innovation through experimentation with new technologies. And to encourage cross-agency collaboration in the industry, O3 World sets aside one business day each year for Agency Field Day – a day of fun, socializing, and healthy competition outside the office with other digital agencies in Philadelphia.

O3 World has made culture a high priority for its leaders and employees,  so we are proud to have a place on this prestigious list of Top Company Cultures. This comprehensive ranking of 75 US-based businesses exhibiting high-performance cultures was created in partnership with culture management software and service provider Culture IQ®. Organizational cultures were evaluated using Culture IQ’s methodology for measuring high-performance cultures – employee surveys to assess a company’s strength across 10 core qualities of culture, including performance focus, support, innovation, among others. There, she’ll present “Let’s Go Crazy: What Prince Taught Me About Agile Web Development.”

Many musicians have unique ways of working, but Prince’s studio methods have shaped the way Courtney approaches Agile development and the creation of development workflows. O3 World Redesigns La Colombe's e-Commerce Experience

    O3 World redesigns La Colombe's e-commerce experience

“America Deserves Better Coffee.” That’s the motto that has propelled La Colombe from a small European-style cafe to one of the world’s premier coffee roasters. A lot has changed since the company opened its first cafe in 1994, but La Colombe has found a way to marry ancient and modern coffee traditions from around the world. When the brand turned to O3 World to consolidate its web presence into a beautiful, responsive interface, we jumped at the opportunity to reflect the care that goes into each cup of coffee and into the overall digital brand experience.

In redesigning and developing the La Colombe site, the O3 World team pushed the limits of Shopify, the leading cloud-based, multichannel commerce platform, providing them with unique content solutions. As we continue our relationship with La Colombe, we look forward to bringing more innovative digital solutions to the product and check-out experience , as well as helping to tackle the brand’s biggest business challenges.

Prism Engineering, Inc. Turns to O3 World for Site Redesign

    Prism Engineering site redesign

As the mid-Atlantic region’s predominant source for CAD/CAM solutions, expert technical support, and award-winning training services, Prism Engineering needed a site that could consistently match its technical expertise. The organization traditionally relied on phone-based registrations for its SolidWorks 3D CAD sofware and Mastercam CAM software trainings, but O3 World redesigned www.prismeng.com to incorporate DrupalCommerce, Salesforce, and Pardot into a completely revamped digital exploration and registration experience.

Now, customers can browse through training courses – filtered by location, category, and date – and register seamlessly. Using these new digital registration and lead generation processes, Prism Engineering will continue to expand its footprint as the region’s most trusted and preferred source for CAD, CAM, and 3D printing solutions. Since launching this redesigned site earlier this month, we’ve already seen an uptick in site statistics and in feedback, making O3 World even more excited to add more to the site in the coming months.

Courtney Wilburn Recaps Experience at White House LGBTQ Tech and Innovation Summit

    Courtney Wilburn

This post was written by O3 World Developer Courtney Wilburn, who was named a White House LGBTQ Tech & Innovation Fellow.

In early July, I was selected for the White House LGBTQ Tech & Innovation Fellowship. This prestigious group – made up of innovative, talented, and influential technologists, designers, product specialists, and community leaders – was assembled to help solve some of America’s toughest challenges.

Earlier this week, I headed down to Washington, DC for the White House LGBTQ Tech & Innovation Summit. The night before the summit, I joined some of the other fellows for a party, hosted by Lesbians Who Tech, on the roof of the Embassy Row Hotel. The weather cooperated and the club soda (which I drink by the gallon) was free!

The White House LGBTQ Tech & Innovation Summit was hosted by Leanne Pittsford, who founded Lesbians Who Tech (of which I’m the Philly chapter co-chair; come hang with us!). Each LWT San Francisco chapter meeting begins with high fives, so we were asked to turn to our neighbors and exchange high fives, which was a nice way to break the ice. Before we got into smaller introductions, we heard from Angelica Ross, who uses technology and tech resources to empower the trans community. She was awesome and a selfless promoter of her cause.

Next, we introduced ourselves to the larger group in ask/offer format. Each of us gave our name and where we were from, asked a question or favor of the group, then offered something that we could help someone with. The introductions ranged from somber and serious to uplifting to flat-out hilarious. I asked folks to teach a black woman how to code, then offered to mentor people with Linux and back-end programming. People actually hit me up for programming tips and advice throughout the day, which was cool and really spoke to the level of sincerity people had about the event. Other fellows’ experience ranged from those who deal with issues of diversity in hiring to those with no professional involvement with LGBTQ issues, those who work in tech and are themselves members of the LGBTQ community (like me) to people who provide direct services at the intersection of LGBTQ and tech. There was a diversity of perspectives, but no shortage of talent.

Speakers at the summit included Megan Smith (United States Chief Technology Officer in the Office of Science and Technology Policy), Aliya Rahman (formerly of Code for Progress), Clarence Wardell (Presidential Innovation Fellow), Christine Samala (18 Million Rising and VoterVOX), Hillary Hartley (18F), and Nicole Thomas (Cleveland Hacks). After these men and women spoke about projects they were working on or affiliated with, we broke into smaller groups to brainstorm and discuss how some of these things related to questions we’d had. We wrote our ideas on sticky notes that were posted along the walls of the auditorium.

After our working lunch (which consisted of lots of networking while eating delicious hummus, pita, and salad) came the “real” reason we were there. We broke into groups to lay the groundwork for actual projects related to:

    1. Inclusion and citizenship
    2. Climate and miscellaneous
    3. Community building and police data
    4. Housing

For two hours, we brainstormed on problems and worked down to two tangible projects that we could take on over the course of the next few months. I’ll be primarily working on ways to use police and law enforcement data to help people understand their rights regarding personal data and in the event of an arrest, hold police accountable for mistakes, and for people to use open police data to “hack” interactions with law enforcement on both the individual and community levels.

After a continuation of the morning’s ask/offer session, each project manager presented the projects that came out of the breakout sessions. They asked a few of us (myself included) to talk about the police data project. We heard some awesome ideas. One person even had a working demo (shout out to rapid development with the MEAN stack)!

We wrapped up the day with a few closing remarks, then I headed back to Philadelphia. Overall, wow – I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who nominated me. This was really a life-changing experience. It was great to connect with so many like-minded people and work toward something that can potentially positively impact so many people. I can’t wait to see how the project develops and (hopefully) carry on with this work long after the project ends.

O3 World Wins the CSS Design Awards' August 8 Website of the Day

O3 World wins at the CSS Design Awards

o3world.com was named Website of the Day on August 8, 2015 by the CSS Design Awards – an international web design and development platform that honors and showcases work that pushes the boundaries of creativity, functionality, and usability. The site, designed by O3 World staff, is a true reflection of the agency, bringing people and culture, as well as products and services, to the forefront. Our nearly equal scores for creative design, code and function, and UX and content demonstrate the agency’s commitment to excellence across design, development, and user experience capabilities.

As an additional agency honor, forgeconf.com was named one of three Award Nominees for the August 6, 2015 Website of the Day by the same committee. The site for the one-day event for digital innovators feels like the conference itself – a place for makers. With the rise of business methodologies that mirror design and development practices, the role of the web professional has transitioned from the studio to the C-suite. As a business owner and CXO of O3 World, Mike Gadsby is in a unique position – overseeing the systems and solutions implemented to solve client problems, while maintaining a respect and understanding of the impact business decisions have on the bottom line. But whether you write code, wireframe or win accounts, you have the opportunity to make “business” decisions and do more than what your job title dictates.

Join Mike Gadsby and Refresh Philly for an exploration of the principles, processes and considerations that influence better business decisions on September 10 at Drexel University’s URBN Annex Screening Room. Register here today.

    Keith Scandone

As Philadelphia's tech scene continues to grow, so does O3 World's focus on innovation. That's why we're constantly pushing ourselves to experiment with new technologies and new processes to create even better digital products. One example? An app that leverages iBeacon and Raspberry Pi technologies to make the first few minutes in the office a little more pleasant by playing each person's chosen theme music as he or she walks in the door.

"I think Philly is finally more than ever creating its own identity and standing on its own," said O3 World Partner/CEO Keith Scandone. Read more about Philadelphia's technological evolution and our latest labs project in Philadelphia City Paper.
